Depending on your current immigration status in the UK, you can apply to change (‘switch’) to a Tier 5 (Temporary Worker - Government Authorised Exchange) visa.

The Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange category is for those seeking to stay in the United Kingdom through approved schemes that aim to share knowledge, experience and best practice through work placements, whilst experiencing the wider social and cultural setting of the United Kingdom. This category cannot be used to fill job vacancies or provide a way to bring unskilled labour to the United Kingdom.

You can apply for switching into Tier 5 Temporary Worker - Government Authorised Exchange visa if you:

  • want to seek leave to remain to the UK for a short time for work experience or to do training, an Overseas Government Language Programme, research or a fellowship through an approved government authorised exchange scheme
  • have a sponsor
  • meet the other eligibility requirements
  • You meet the immigration status requirement for successfully switching into Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange Scheme

Eligibility Criteria

For you to apply for entry clearance under Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange Scheme category, you must have both of the following:

  • a certificate of sponsorship (CoS) reference number from your UK sponsor
  • £945 in savings - this is to prove you can support yourself and you must have had this in your bank account for 90 days before you apply. You won’t need £945 in savings if your fully approved (‘A-rated’) sponsor has stated on your certificate of sponsorship that they’ll certify your maintenance and that you won’t claim benefits during your stay.

Your sponsor will be an overarching body who manages the government authorised exchange scheme. This overarching body must have the support of a UK government department.

Individual employers and organisations will not be allowed to sponsor migrants in this category, even if they are licensed as sponsors under other tiers or other categories of Tier 5. The only exceptions to this are if you are coming to the UK:

  • as a sponsored researcher, where the higher education institution you are coming to work at will be your sponsor; or
  • to work for a government department or agency.

Any work you do must be skilled which means it must be equivalent to NVQ or SVQ level 3 or above. This is unless you are taking part in the scheme set up as part of the European Union's lifelong learning programme, where you can do vocational education and training at a lower skill level.

You may be allowed to stay in the UK for up to 12 or 24 months under this category, depending on the scheme you are using and the length of time of your work as shown on your certificate of sponsorship.
