FAQs: UK Ancestry Visa

You can apply for a UK Ancestry visa if you:

  • are a Commonwealth citizen
  • are applying from outside the UK
  • are able to prove that one of your grandparents was born in the UK
  • are able and planning to work in the UK
  • meet the other eligibility requirements

No, you cannot switch into UK ancestry visa category from inside the UK. You have to apply for entry clearance from outside the UK as switching into this category from inside the UK is not allowed.

The applicant must be a Commonwealth citizen who:

  • is aged 17 or over
  • can provide proof that one of their grandparents was born in the UK and islands (Guernsey, Jersey or Isle of Man), Republic of Ireland before 31 March 1922, or on a British-registered ship or aircraft
  • is able to work and intends to take or seek employment in the UK
  • can maintain and accommodate themselves and any dependants while in the UK without recourse to public funds
  • has valid entry clearance under UK ancestry

As a result of successful entry clearance application, you will  be granted UK visa for 5 years under UK Ancestry visa category.

If you do not meet the requirements for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) under UK ancestry category, you can apply for extension/renewal of your UK ancestry visa. As a result of successful application, you will  be granted further leave to remain for a period of 5 years.
