A visitor  wishing to come to the UK for medical treatment should provide satisfactory evidence concerning:

  • their medical condition and treatment
  • expenses likely to be incurred
  • how they will be funded
  • the likely duration of their treatment

The doctor of consultant who has to provide the medical treatment to the applicant must be member of the General Medical Council (GMC). You can see the list of registered medical practitioners.

According to Appendix V of the Immigration Rules which deals with application for visit visas, the applicants for entry clearance as a visitor for private medical treatment in the UK should meet the following additional requirements in addition to the requirement of sufficiency of funds for maintenance, adequate accommodation and intention to return to the country of origin:

  • If the applicant is suffering from a communicable disease, they must have satisfied the medical inspector that they are not a danger to public health.
  • The applicant must have arranged their private medical treatment before they travel to the UK, and must provide a letter from their doctor or consultant detailing:
    • the medical condition requiring consultation or treatment; and
    • the estimated costs and likely duration of any treatment which must be of a finite duration; and
    • where the consultation or treatment will take place.
  • If the applicant is applying for an 11 month visit visa for the purposes of private medical treatment they must also:
    • provide evidence from their medical practitioner in the UK that the proposed treatment is likely to exceed 6 months but not more than 11 months; and
    • if required under paragraph A39 and Appendix T Part 1 of the Immigration Rules, provide a valid medical certificate issued by a medical practitioner listed in Appendix T Part 2 of the Immigration Rules confirming that they have undergone screening for active pulmonary tuberculosis and that this tuberculosis is not present in the applicant.
